ARTIST STATEMENT
Singer // Songwriter
Sofia Escamilla is a first gen. alternative R&B singer songwriter from Chicago, Illinois. She grew up on shows like “Hannah Montana” and movies like “Camp Rock”, which made her feel like she could do anything. She knew then and there, that this was the career she would eventually pursue. She began singing and writing her own songs when she was 6 years old, and as she grew older she continuously worked on her craft, trying to better herself one song at a time.
Studying voice and piano at “Old Folk School of Music”, she owes a lot of her growth to her many music teachers. One of those teachers, Lindsay Weinberg, pitched her to her local news station. She performed on WGN9 “When I was Your Man” - by Bruno Mars. She remembers being so nervous, looking at those big camera lights, but through that anxiousness she found a love for performance. In high school she took every possible music related course she could take, performing at every show she could- as she knew this would push her towards the right direction.
Being one of the first of her family to go to college- She attended Berklee College of Music, and majored in Songwriting in pursuit of that dream of becoming an Independent Artist.
Proud to be the daughter of Mexican immigrants- she approaches her music as a vessel in which she can express her cultural roots, and feelings regarding first gen struggles. Deeply community driven- she’s stated that -
“Growing up in a tight knit community, like the block I lived on, not only shaped me into the person that I've become today, but also as an artist.”
Pulling inspiration from indie, hiphop, and old school R&B- with influences like “Amaria”, “Kali Uchis” and early “SZA”- she has created playful, soulful, dream-like soundscapes within her own music. With her music ranging from sultry pop/r&b music, to more real and raw issues- like mental health struggles and relationships issues- regardless of the listeners background- they are sure to get whisked away into this musical world she's created for not only herself, but for the people.
Currently, she is working on workshopping some demos, and getting those into the studio to be produced, mixed, mastered, and soon- released into the world. Working with Classick Studios, famous for producing on SZA’s CNTRL album; she plans on releasing her first single in upcoming months, followed by many more.
